Born in Lublin, Poland. Graduated as a construction engineer. At the outbreak of WW II, fought on Poland's eastern front and was wounded. With his father, Jan, joined the underground resistance movement against the German invaders. Father and son were arrested and interrogated in Katowice, where the father was tortured to death. Jan was taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he worked for 4 years making furniture in inhuman conditions. In 1944 he was transferred to the Sachsenhausen camp, assigned to building aircraft. Was liberated in 1945 and spent time in a transition camp near Luneburg where he headed a small woodworking plant.
Emigrated to Canada in 1950, settled in Saint-Eustache and founded a furniture-manufacturing factory, Gradek Woodwork Co.Ltd and Gradek Import Co.Ltd. Died at age 86 in Florida, mourned by his wife Monika and their four children: Jan-Jozef, Tomasz-Ignacy, Irena-Monika and Anna-Maria.
