Zbigniew WARUSZYŃSKI
( 1915-1968 )
Born in eastern Poland. During the war was imprisoned in German concentration camps, Mauthausen, Melk and Ebensee. Liberated in Austria by the US Army, he turned to journalism, publishing current news and and writing two books in Polish on wartime history. He took an active part in Polish community organizations. Emigrated to Canada in 1950, but, unable to continue in journalism, he learned typesetting and held different blue-collar jobs. He married Maria Teresa Wojtowicz (below) with whom he had three children, Beata, Lidia and Barbara. He became the well-known editor of Montreal's weekly, The Polish Voice (Głos Polski), also publishing a literary supplement, Current (Prąd). Columnist and historian of the Polish community, he was a passionate advocate of social action, and was the recipient of numerous distinctions including Polonia Restituta and the Cross of Honour. Died aged 52.
Maria Teresa WÓJTOWICZ
( 1926-1994 )
Born in south-east Poland, married Zbigniew Waruszynski (above). In Montreal, worked in a bank and together with her husband took a very active part in the life of the Polish community. After her husband's death, continued publishing a Montreal column in the Polish weekly. She was longstanding teacher in the Polish Saturday schools. Co-authored the book on the Copernicus Monument in Montreal. Mother of Beata, Lidia and Barbara, she died at 68 years of age.
