Jan ZADARNOWSKI
( 1900-1973 )
Born in central Poland. Major in the Polish Army. He enrolled in the armed forces at age 18, fought in the Polish-Soviet war of 1918-1920, then worked in the Polish Ministry of Defence. In 1939 he took part in the resistance to the German invasion of Poland, sought refuge in Romania and was interned. Escaped through Yugoslavia and Italy to join the Polish Army in France. In 1940, following the fall of France, he was interned in Switzerland until 1945 when he managed to make his way to liberated Paris. He worked at the Polish military mission. Received numerous war medals. After demobilization in 1949, Jan trained as a bookbinder and thereafter worked in this field. In 1951, he emigrated to Canada with his wife Maria and their two sons. In spite of his failing health, he continued to work while also being very active in the Polish community. Died at 73 years of age.
Maria ZADARNOWSKA
born KORZENIOWSKA

( 1908-1971 )
Born in south-east Poland. Graduated in commerce in Warsaw, married Jan Zadarnowski, with whom she had two sons, Janusz-Henryk and Marek. Separated from her husband for seven years during the war, she finally joined him in Paris in 1946, travelling clandestinely via Czechoslavakia and Germany. Emigrated with her family to Montreal in 1951, where she took a very active part in the Polish community, co-founding the Committee to Aid Polish Children and supporting the Polish Women's Federation of Canada. She died at age 63.
