Stanisław OSSOWSKI

Born in Warsaw. Polish Vice-Consul in Riga until September 1939. Following the outbreak of World War II he made his way to France where he joined the Polish underground resistance movement in its fight against the Nazi invaders. Studied law in Paris. Member of the Polish Armed Forces in the West as of 1944, demobilized in 1948 with the rank of first lieutenant. Recipient of the 1939-1945 Military Medal. Emigrated to Canada towards the end of the 1940’s and settled in Montreal. Married Anna Rodziewicz in 1964. Died at the age of 76.

Born Anna Rodziewicz in Łomża (northeastern Poland). Spent her childhood in Vladivostok (far-eastern Russia) where her father worked as an engineer. Returned to Poland in the 1920's and studied Law. In 1928, married Jerzy Matusiński with whom she had a daughter Janina. Accompanied her husband on numerous trips (USA, France, Russia). Her husband, a counsellor at the Polish Embassy in Moscow and Kiev, was arrested in October 1939 by the Soviet authorities and disappeared without trace. Anna spent the war years in England and France. In 1950, she settled in Montreal where she worked at Eaton's and Morgan's department stores. In 1964, she married Stanisław Ossowski and lived in Saint-Sauveur until her husband's death in 1975. Anna died 23 years later at age 95.

Daughter of Anna Rodziewicz (above) and Jerzy Matusinski, a diplomat, Ina lost her father at age 9 when he was arrested by the Soviets and disappeared without a trace. She spent the war years in France with her mother and managed to continue her schooling in spite of numerous moves through Red Cross refugee shelters. At war’s end, Ina completed college in Paris. Unable to return to Warsaw, she and her mother emigrated to Canada in 1950. In 1962 she married Tadeusz Makarewicz (below). They settled in Ville Saint-Laurent and raised two daughters. In her later years Ina fulfilled her literary aspirations as the author of two books about her beloved cats, launched at the Salon du Livre de Montréal. Ina’s home and garden were her inspiration and sanctuary, and there she was able to remain until almost her final days. She died at 77.
Tadeusz (Tadzio) MAKAREWICZ

Born in Wołyń (southern Poland), where his parents owned a tobacco plantation. Oldest of seven children. In 1940, the family fell victim to the wave of Soviet seizures of estates and deportation to labor camps. Released in 1941, Tadzio's father joined the fledgeling Polish army in the USSR under General Anders, while the rest of the family was evacuated to Iran in 1942. Tadzio went to the the British Cadet School in Palestine. His mother was sent to India with her daughters and younger son. The family was reunited in 1947 in London where Tadzio completed a degree in Civil Engineering followed by a Master's degree from McGill University in Montreal. In 1957 the family emigrated to Canada where in 1962 Tadzio married Janina Matusińska (above) with whom he had two daughters. Throughout his career he was involved in some of the most notable engineering projects in Quebec. Following a demanding professional life Tadzio enjoyed a quiet retirement with Ina until her death in 2007 whereupon he moved to Ontario to be near his eldest daughter. Died at age 87.
