Mieczysław Piotr (Mietek)
NITOSŁAWSKI

( 1917-2012 )
Born in Vitebsk during the Russian Revolution, educated in Poland. Studied Law at Wilno University when World War II broke out. Made his way to Coetquidan, France, to serve in the Polish Army, then in 1940 managed to reach England. Continuing in active service, fought in the 1st Armoured Division under General Maczek, took part in the liberation of northern France, Belgium and Holland. In 1945, earned his Law degree at the Polish Faculty of Law in Oxford. In 1947, married Teresa Romer, they emigrated to Canada in 1950, where they educated their five children, Jolanta (1948), Anna (1950), Mariella (1953), Marek (1956) and Stefan (1960). In Montreal, Mietek worked in shipping companies and actively supported Polish organizations and the scouting movement. In 1974, he married his second wife, Krystyna (below). He was an excellent skier, sailor and gardener, savouring life and enjoying parties and friends. He spent his last years in Eastman, and died in Montreal at the age of 94, mourned by his children and grandchildren.
Krystyna NITOSŁAWSKA

( 1923-2007 )
Born in Kielce, Poland. Lived in southern Africa for 35 years after fleeing Poland via the Balkans and the Middle East with her parents at the beginning of World War II. She initially lived in Kenya and Botswana with her first husband, E. Sampson and their son, Mark. From 1959-1974 she lived in Capetown, South Africa where she owned The Montgomery Hotel which she managed successfully. In Capetown she kept close ties with the Polish community. In 1974 she moved to Montreal and married Mietek Nitoslawski (above). She loved nature, especially wild mushroom picking. She was a terrific cook and her gardening skills were on display in her last home in Eastman, Quebec, where she died at the age of 84.
