Lucjan GŁOWACKI
( 1922-2015 )
( 1922-2015 )
Born in Brzesc, Poland (now Belarus), son of Franciszek and Anna, née Cegielska. At age 18 he was deported to Siberia by the Soviets, together with his mother and sister. His father, the Brzesc Chief of Police, and his uncle, an officer in the Polish resistance, were arrested by the Soviet secret service and executed.
In the Siberian labour camp, Lucjan managed to get a planning job thanks to his knowlege of mathematics and related skills, while other deportees died of hard labour, hunger and cold. Released from detention in 1941 as a result of the Sikorski-Majski agreement, he made his way to the Anders Army, and with it to Palestine, where he was a motorcycle instructor and truck driver. Promoted to Lieutenant, he served in Middle-East military operations, leading up to the Italian campaign, in which he fought at the decisive battle for Monte Cassino as an artillery intelligence officer of the Polish II Corps under General Anders.
After the war, he completed high school in Italy and studied Electrical Engineering in London, England, under the Marshall Plan. He earned a Masters in Engineering. He met his future wife Carmelita in a line for the Covent-Garden Royal Opera, and married her in 1951. They had three children.
He worked in Bristol for one year before he emigrating to Canada with his family. He qualified for an engineering position in Clarke City, Quebec. A year later, he became a full-time electrical consulting engineer at Stadler Hurter (now KSH). He was subsequently Project Manager for large projects in Brazil, Pakistan and Iran among others.
After the death of his first wife, he married Julitta Gliszczynska in 1969, and had two children with her, Henryk and Luczia. He viewed life like a poet and lived it as an engineer. He also appreciated art, music, good conversations, dry humour, and spent summers at the family cottage in the Laurentians and winters in a condo in Florida. He died in Montreal at age 93.
