Antoni DZIEWAŁTOWSKI
( 1903-2000 )
( 1903-2000 )
Born in north-eastern Poland, then under Tsarist rule. At age 16 Antoni lost his entire family to the deadly 'Spanish influenza'. Completed his studies in independent Poland.
Mobilized in 1939, he was arrested by the Soviet army and deported to a camp near Murmansk, above the Arctic circle. Freed after the 1941 Polish-Soviet accord, he joined the newly-forming Polish army under General Anders, and was evacuted to the Middle-East. He then served in the North-African and Italian Campaigns, including in the battle for Monte Cassino.
Demobilized in England, he emigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Montreal. Wrote a memoir of his war-time years, and published some poetry. Was active in community work. After a serious automobile accident and long treatment, he spent the last years of his life at the Home for Seniors of the Polish-Canadian Welfare Institute in the east of Montreal. He continued to support Polish welfare institutions, and died in the Home at the age of 97.
