Paul Zdzisław TARNOWSKI
( 1937- 2018 )
( 1937- 2018 )
Paul was born on the eve of WWII in 'Dzikow' Castle, now in Tarnobrzeg, the youngest son of Count Artur Tarnowski and his wife Roza née Zamoyska. By 1946 the family had to move to Belgium and in a few years emigrated to Canada. In Montreal, Paul attended the Royal Canadian Military College, excelling in fencing and sports. He was also a keen bridge player throughout his life.
In 1964, marriage to Yolande (Maria Giulia) Lucciola followed his move to Ottawa as a civil servant, and in 1965 he was received into the Order of the Knights of Malta, as Honour and Devotion.
On retirement, Paul devoted 20 years to establishing the Tarnowski Family Association in Poland, extensively reuniting family members, not only in Poland, but also from Australia, Africa, Brazil, Europe, Canada, and the USA.
Despite extensive world travel and numerous health difficulties, he helped publish a family memoir about WWII, The Future Will Tell, by Maria Tarnowska, the wife of diplomat Adam Tarnowski.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather.
In 2018, Paul died suddenly on a family visit to Calgary, soon after celebrating his 81st birthday. He is deeply mourned by his wife, their children, (John Anthony Amor and Julia Anne Marie) and their grandchildren (Ashley Emma and Andrew John).
