Jan SULIMA POPIEL

Born in southern Poland. Studied at an officers' school in Vienna. Joined Pilsudski's "Legiony" to fight for Poland's independence, then enrolled in the Polish army and fought in the Polish-Soviet war. In the inter-war years, managed his family estate, then became director of a mining company in Silesia. In 1939 fought against the German invaders, left Poland with the army and made his way to France, then to Portugal. Was sent to Canada to recruit able-bodied Poles or descendants willing to serve in the overseas war. After the war, Jan worked as a draftsman and technical-drawing instructor. Was married to Zofia-Maria Solowij (below), with whom he had two children, Tadeusz and Ewa Maria. Jan died in New York at age 63.

Born in southern Poland. Completed studies in economics and household management. Married Jan Popiel (above), with whom she had two children, Tadeusz and Ewa-Maria. During the war, she followed her husband to France, Portugal, then Canada in 1940. Devoted to her family, she died at age 76.
Her brothers, Tadeusz and Volodymyr Solowij, are buried in graves no. 14 and 15 [lot C1 014].

Younger brother of Jan (above). Graduated from the Military Aviation Academy in Deblin, and served in the Air Force in WWII. Awarded outstanding distinctions for valour. Emigrated to Canada after the war. Married to Anna Sadowska (below). Died in Hamilton at the age of 61.

Kathryn Anne POPIEL

Grand-daughter of Jan and Zofia (above), daughter of Tadeusz. Studied Fine Arts at OCAD university, Toronto. She worked for 16 years for Ontario Hydro, in spite of suffering from severe diabetes with which she was diagnosed at age 13. In 2000, she received a kidney transplant from her brother Mark, which allowed her to survive for another 9 years. She died at age 45, mourned by a large and loving family.
